Our STORY:

Cardinal Ag is a locally owned and operated agriculture retail and services company. Matt Johnson and Dan Smith recognized the farming industry’s need for conservation practices and that a solution was not readily available. Cardinal Ag’s commitment to be good stewards of natural resources pushed them to pursue custom strip-till and consultative use of technology while bringing competitive input pricing to the Ohio area. Being forward-thinking, the folks at Cardinal Ag understand the need to be customer-centric and responsive to grower’s practices. With support from top product manufacturers and environmental agencies, Cardinal Ag offers agronomic and economical solutions to the farming industry that meet sustainability standards. Among these services are strip-till custom applications for fertilizer and nutritional products, proving to provide increased yields, time savings, and operational efficiencies. Cardinal Ag has the procurement power and agronomic experts that match or exceed the large corporate retail service providers with the backing of our network. Cardinal Ag is committed to partnering with growers to bring solutions that meet the needs of each operation.

Our Motto:

Cardinal Ag’s most fundamental and important actions revolve around LEARN SERVE GROW.  Learn Serve Grow is a simple motto we follow when working with growers.  LEARN is to ask questions and then listen so we understand the needs of our growers.  SERVE is to do what we say we’re going to do when we say we’re going to do it.  GROW is to strive to grow a mutually beneficial relationship with each of our growers.  This motto is simplistic in its nature but powerful when it is followed. 

Our Staff

Matt Johnson and his wife, Devyn, and their 7 children relocated back to the midwest and founded Cardinal Ag in November of 2019. Cardinal Ag was founded to provide growers with a locally owned business partner to provide agronomic recommendations and services based on current needs and future regulatory requirements. Matt focuses on understanding the ever-moving dynamics of agriculture and developing practical programs for growers to increase fertilizer stewardship, improve operational efficiencies, bolster yield, and increasing conservation efforts. Matt’s guiding principle is to justify the Cardinal Ag’s presence in your operation through his LEARN SERVE GROW approach. Matt brings his successful retail experience in the agricultural sales industry with a proven growth success.


Dan Smith joins Cardinal Ag after a decade of experience in the agricultural world selling agricultural equipment. His passion for bringing technological advancements to the farm gate led him to Cardinal Ag as a Partner and Owner Operator. Dan’s passion for finding innovative approaches to unlock value for the farmer on the input and technical levels led Dan to move into the retail and services sector. Dan, his wife of 13 years, and his 3 children are his motivation to build Cardinal Ag into a legacy they are proud of.
